We had two drafts of all the chapters from the authors, and were on track to finish the manuscript by August (which eventually proved to be October with hiccups merging all the references). The problem was, we had no final chapter (Chapter 14). So in July we all met in Berkeley (followed by meetings the following month at Academy and again in Berkeley) to decide out how we wanted to conclude the book. The original goal of the book was to provide an up-to-date and complete orientation to the academic study of open innovation. The three editors wanted to make the ideas and research approaches clear to those new to open innovation ...
describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials. Some consider open source a philosophy , others consider it a pragmatic methodology . Before the term open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet , and the attendant need for massive retooling of the computing source code . Opening the source code enabled a self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive communities. Subsequently, a new, three-word phrase " ...

Open Innovation: Buying not making innovation
Google, after all, has done an amazing job with its search engine and, thanks to the profits from all the ads it sells, has an enormous war chest to invest in research and development. The company is so keen on innovation that it allows its engineers to spend 20 percent of their working time on projects that aren't necessarily part of their job description. It's that "20 percent time" that helped spawn such projects as Google Suggest, AdSense for Content and Orkut. And what Google can't invent, it can buy. Its Google Voice application, which it acquired when it bought GrandCentral Communications in 2007, ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Collaboration | How to change your business for success -> Cisco News
Cisco Systems' chief executive John Chambers is famous for talking about – and taking advantage of – market transitions. Chambers now believes organizations the world over are facing one of the most profound transitions of modern business history. "From a business model and leadership perspective, we're seeing a massive shift from management by command-and-control to management by collaboration and teamwork," he said in an interview with the Harvard Business Review last year. "You could almost say this shift is as revolutionary as the assembly line." Chambers has a few good reasons for his ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Disappointment and hope after Cairo
where he sought "a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect" However, the hope that greeted President Obama's speech has turned into disappointment as people realized that turning promises into reality is not easy to achieve. While he should be congratulated on his efforts to change the discourse of US policy towards the Muslim world, it is clear that people expect more than simply statements from him. It is vital to rekindle the new spirit that accompanied President Obama's speech and to discuss together how we can transform it ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
ICKLER: Battles Back For 13th At Iowa Speedway
Brian Ickler may not have had the racetruck to beat in Sunday's Lucas Oil 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway in Newton. But he had arguably the next-best through most of the first half of the race. That's when it went all for naught as the 24-year-old from San Diego, driving in his third Truck Series event in the No. 18 Toyota Tundra for Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) and the 14th of his career, got turned from behind on a restart just past the halfway point in today's 205-lap race, fell two laps off the pace, and used the rest of the day to battle his way back onto the lead lap and settle ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

3.1: Enhance collaboration with other federal and non-federal agencies, the public, and non-profit and private entities. The American education system is not what it could be. In cities and towns around the country, there are schools where students are as likely to leave high school with no credential as they are to leave with a diploma, to say nothing of the postsecondary education they increasingly will need to secure meaningful and lasting employment. Recognizing this, and tired of tolerating mediocre schools for thousands of the neediest and most at-risk students, President Obama and Secretary Duncan have made education a ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

How is your company using employee engagement to drive innovation ...
Looking for potential interviewees for article I am writing about employee engagement and innovation as a value-added initiative during these tough economic times. In other words, how is your company using the creating and innovative thinking of its employees to make the regular, steady flow of creative input part of the way your company does business (i.e. making the contributing of creative ideas part of your organization's culture). Many companies do not seek creative input from their employees for an ongoing basis. The general practice is to have an employee suggestion box (or something similar). I'm looking for ...
Slashdot | Advice for an Open Source Development Grant?
"My colleagues and I are developing an open source medical records system. A senior supervisor approached us and let us know a third party is offering a decent amount of money in the form of a grant for any legitimate medical research project. We were all but promised the money if we could come up with a proposal. Has anyone in the Slashdot community received a grant for open source software development? Are there any good examples of such a grant available? How could one measure the results of open source development for publication?" This discussion has been archived. No new comments can be posted.
