This past week I have had an opportunity to experience some hospital process control and contrast it with traditional project process controls. In doing so, I saw many instances of where today’s projects that exhibit uncertainty could be better managed via prioritization and collaborative decision making than preset plans. How did we get to Traditional Project Management? Project management is a fairly young discipline, yet because its repeatable process scales so well, and is easy to duplicate and automate; it rapidly became the dominant process for running projects. Frederick Taylor published his studies on “Scientific ...

Theory of Constraints and Lean Six Sigma | Practitioner's Toolbox
If you have been in process improvement since the 80s, you have heard of the Theory of Constraints. It was introduced in the book “The Goal” by Eli Goldratt. The theory is summarized in five steps; 1. Identify the constraint 2. Exploit the constraint 3. Subordinate to the constraint 4. Elevate the constraint 5. Start over It works great, but as a Lean Six Sigma DMAIC tool, it is lacking in guidance on how to use it as an improvement philosophy. The concept is fantastic, but the application can be difficult. I have been involved in one implementation of the TOC concepts, but it only provided moderate gains. Identifying ... market research, surveys and trends

Applying theory of constraints principles and lean thinking at the ...
The Maintenance Center for the Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia, launched a program in 2001 combining principles drawn from the Theory of Constraints and Lean thinking. The Center had been constantly plagued by apparent capacity shortages in virtually every department and additional manpower was being considered. An analysis using Theory of Constraints revealed that there was, in fact, more than adequate capacity to handle the workload. The perceived lack of capacity was due to policy constraints imposed on the Center as a result of a push scheduling mechanism. By implementing a pull system for scheduling repairs, ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

What IS the Theory of Constraints? What's a constraint?
is very straightforward - the performance of any organization, relative to its goal, is governed by its constraints. And so, if you want to significantly improve performance you first need to correctly identify these constraints, which isn't always straightforward; then you have to manage the constraints for maximum performance, and manage the non-constraints to support the constraints - or at least, to not get in their way. There are some guiding principles to help you do this, of course. In reality, there are 2 types of constraints, and they get different treatment. Physical constraints are the most obvious, in terms ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Focus on Your Constraints for Fast, Direct Improvements
When managers talk about constraints, they tend to use the term casually. However, a determined and well-planned focus on a business' real constraints - regardless of whether the constraint is downstream in the market (too few sales), upstream in the supply lines, or internal - can produce dramatic improvements, surprisingly quickly. There's no question that Lean, Six Sigma and ERP technologies dominate the conversation when it comes to improvement programs these days. Nevertheless, Theory of Constraints , or TOC, the technology that applies the principle of leverage inside organizations and supply chains, has ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

CIRAS - TOC and Lean
Eli Goldratt has said that TOC, JIT, TQM, and Lean are all pieces of the same puzzle. What exactly does he mean? I don’t know for sure. So the following paragraphs contain my opinions on this subject as it pertains specifically to Lean and TOC. First I ask myself, "What is the ‘puzzle’ to which Eli refers?" The following is based on the premise that the ‘puzzle’ is how to achieve the goal of a for-profit company. Thus companies with different goals may benefit more from a different approach. I do not intend to question the chosen goal of any company; only the owners have the right to choose ...
