Excellent treatment of what's often forgotten, dismissed or mythologized. An interesting look at the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the remarkable character who lead it for most of its first couple decades. The Fiance. Although this book was required text, and I am usually just a reader of novels, the book held my attention. Excellent use of biography to examine larger issues. One of Edmund Morgan's most enduring works, The Puritan Dilemma, published in 1962, is still a good starting point for understanding the motivations behind Puritan migration to America and the ideological and political difficulties ... market research, surveys and trends

History of Work Ethic
From a historical perspective, the cultural norm placing a positive moral value on doing a good job because work has intrinsic value for its own sake was a relatively recent development (Lipset, 1990). Work, for much of the ancient history of the human race, has been hard and degrading. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
How would you describe Puritan Work Ethic? - Yahoo! Answers
The Protestant Work Ethic (or the Puritan Work Ethic) is a concept in sociology, economics and history, attributable to the work of Max Weber. It is based upon the notion that the Calvinist emphasis on the necessity for hard work is proponent of a person's calling and worldly success is a sign of personal salvation. It is argued that Protestants beginning with Martin Luther had reconceptualised worldly work as a duty which benefits both the individual and society as a whole. Thus, the Catholic idea of good works was transformed into an obligation to work diligently as a sign of grace. You can read more here: ...

The whole premise behind "Puritan Work Ethic" was that hard work led to salvation. This is due to the belief that if you are working hard you have little time for personal vices. Imagine, if you were working all day you would have problems spending all night drinking and going to whore houses and getting up to work the next day. This is still a major issue in American society today. Americans are some of the most overworked people on the planet! Of course, there are almost more (if not so) issues with the problems faced by overworked individuals. Stress, poor health, little time with family, friends and others. You could say ...
